Property of [`Placement`](Placement.md) · stable · since 2.0.0

```ts
parent?: Part;
```

The part it hangs under; [`at`](Placement.at.md) is then local to it. When no part is left at that address (its model removed, a new asset without it, ID4, or its item dropped), this part is removed with it in that commit and reads `exists: false`; create it again under the new part. A [`Collection.load`](Collection.load.md) whose parent has no part left at the load's own commit point (a swap queued before it whose asset lacks that part) places nothing, resolves with a part that reads `exists: false` and records 'handle-disposed'. A [`Collection.load`](Collection.load.md)'s parent must not lie in the subtree of the item it replaces (a part hung under that item): when it does at the call, the load rejects HoloInputError('invalid-input') at the call; when it comes to lie there only by the load's commit point, nothing commits, as for an abort after the resolve, the old item stays and the load records 'invalid-input'. A parent address that survives a swap (a new asset that keeps that part) keeps this part under the new one; to remove it with the swap, clear its owner through the swap's commit (`commit.tx` in a [`beforeCommit`](Session.beforeCommit.md) hook). A `visible: false` or `pickable: false` on the parent, a mesh included, reaches this part, and its pose moves it; the parent's `shadows`, [`material`](Part.material.md) and `outline` never do, a group's included (spec section 6.10, R8).

**Default:** the collection's root

## Generic-API test (spec 3.1)

| Rule | Result |
| --- | --- |
| 1. Neutral name | pass: `parent` names no product |
| 2. A precedent | not recorded: no ledger row (coverage.json) names this member or its owner |
| 3. Two apps, or labs | not recorded: no ledger row names this member or its owner |
| 4. The cheaper fix first | not recorded per member (Appendix B decides it per need) |
